Friday Night Summer Series Round 1 Bulwick Estates Friday 7th May 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 hours of constant rain before and during the race led to a complete mud bath over the challenging 10km lap. The lap consisted of just about every off road terrain proved a good challenge to the riders, rut riding rodeos in full evidence. After the 1st lap, veteran Vic Barnett (welland valley) held the lead by virtue of his cyclo-cross skills, helped by early pace setters Smiffy and Scott Clipstone heading off course before doubling back. Vic headed seniors John Smith and Lloyd Bettles (both numplumz.com) and recent numplumz.com signing youth rider Scott Clipstone, closely followed by a 3 veteran tussle of James Carpenter, Gary Hill (CATS MBC) and Ron Rutgers (numplumz.com) with leading junior Lewis Harris (rugby velo) just ahead of veteran Jack Peterson (numplumz.com). Jack would like to apologise for being a mobile chicane on the first lap, why was he riding on semi-slicks?????? With the weather still worsening, Organiser Neil Holman decided to pull the race at 40 minutes, so any rider who did there first lap after this time had finished the race. Otherwise riders would have needed lights to finish. At the end the seniors regained the lead, with John Smith (numplumz.com) finishing his 20km in 1-05-10, just 35 seconds ahead of team mate Lloyd Bettles and a further 31 seconds back was leading veteran Vic Barnett (welland Valley) some 2 minutes ahead of Veteran numplumster Jack Peterson, who caught and jumped away from the Rutgers/Hill battle in the last 500 metres of the race.
