After Initial fears from the organisers that the
new date, and subsequent huge nettle growth for this round would mean the loss
of some good singletrack , the circuit proved a cracker I thought.
Due
to poor course marking (get some arrows boys - helps no end) we had the novelty
of a Formula 1 styleé rolling lap of the course and then a grid
formation and race start, I thought it was great and every race should do
it.
The start was a fast tarmac blast to try and split the field, and if
you were lucky you got a clear go at the tight woods, those that didn't would
be well peed off I guess. Rob Lee got a stormer and got away to lead from
Start to finish, in a depleted field due to regular riders being away on
national points race duty in Wales. Phil Hughes chased him hard all the way
with a good start while Ben Loaker , me, Nige and Stu Knubley got early clear
breaks.
Nigel Scott disappeared after the leaders after the first lap to
secure a brilliant 3rd, hotly pursued by Ben Loaker and Junior Lewis Harris.
First Garry Hill passed me then Keith Sperry stormed past again at speed
looking good for another Vets win. Then Disaster for Keith as he punctured
on lap 2 leaving a race long battle again between Gary and me as we circulated
with Lewis.
Gary could get a good gap on the long fast sections, which I
could pull back in the woods just, for the last lap I took all the risks and
got ready for a lung busting effort to hold him on the tarmac but in the end
there was no need. Gary smacked one of the kerb step ups hard and flatted
his rear instantly, leaving me to Cruise for a gift win, but hey they all
count. Friday the 13th works for me.
Plumz Ian chased me hard all the
way for a storming 2nd in the Juniors, one more lap and lewis could have been
yours next time mate. |
